Tonsillitis ac. purulenta.
Krampustag.
This is what I have gathered from the few people I have talked to about Krampus:
Krampus is a little devil-like creature that runs around and wreaks havoc on December 5th, the day before Nikolaustag (St. Nicholas Day). So, Nikolaus, naturally, brings gifts to all the good children. The day before, however, Krampus runs around town and scares and swats all the bad ones. Anytime I ask an Austrian about Krampus I get one of two responses: 1) laughter 2) "I hate Krampus."
There is usually a sort of parade in the center of town. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) Krampus isn't really celebrated in Burgenland. At least not in the traditional way. He is, however celebrated at the Fachhochschule (advanced technical college; University of Applied Sciences). This Tuesday there was a big party at the Fachhochschule in Eisenstadt and of course Arthur, Carolyn and I had to go. Partying on a school night is usually more fun than partying on a weekend, and this night was no exception.
But it all went downhill from there.
Wednesday morning I woke up with a sore throat. I couldn't sleep at all that night and on Thursday the throat was worse and I was nauseous as well. I looked in the mirror and the back of my throat was grey! After a quick hypochondriacal breakdown - I thought it could be cancer, but my roommate assurred me it wasn't - I got dressed and headed to school.
I thought it might get better. I drank tea with honey, I drank homemade apple juice. I tried to rest. There were people to see, alps to visit and parties to go this weekend. But Friday morning was the same, if not worse. So I finally dragged myself to the hospital up the street. Carolyn met me there when I called her at 8:30 am, on the verge of tears. The doctors were great (although when they first said Tonsillitis, they scared me and I thought they meant surgery was needed). And now I have meds! And sage tea! The Apotheke wouldn't give me the entire prescription of antibiotics though...saying I had to get another prescription from an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor if I wanted the full ten days worth. They did, however, give me quite a few more pain-killers than I was prescribed.
Now, I'm getting over strep throat.
